Lesson 1 - Education 5612 - Blog what??

After reviewing the information listed in Lesson 1 regarding the new forms of communication, I was left with some concerns.
I understand that the educational system must keep up with the students and present information through the means of communication students work with.
But whose to say that all the means of communication utilized by students is good or beneficial?
Should there not be a distinction between a social communication and educational communication?
I can see the benefits of VoiP and Podcasts as a supplement to the classroom experience.
I think IMing is an excellent way to assist students with homework questions.

Utilizing Myspace and Facebook for non college aged students? Neither social networking site has enough security features designed to protect children from predators for my liking. Using it for academic reasons does not shelter from the rest of the site.

So, for this class, I have created this blog. I am not a blogger. I have friends that blog daily (some multiple times a day). There is nothing so important in my life that I need to write about daily for someone else to read. I have attempted to blog before (usually regarding dieting), but I blog for a week or 2 and then I stop. I can see the benefits of blogging in an education setting. Especially if the students are working on projects requiring some reflection. It would be an excellent forum to share their thoughts and read the perspectives of others in the class.

Now, Second Life.... it was too much.
I have played the Sims... It is addictive and I am an adult. I strongly encourage creativity, but virtual living seems to take students to far out of reality. Just my opinion.
